Life Coach vs Therapist: What's the Difference?

An honest comparison · Soundboard

"Should I see a life coach or a therapist?" is one of the most common — and most important — questions people ask when they feel stuck. The two get lumped together, but they do genuinely different jobs. Choosing the right one saves you time, money, and frustration.

The short version

Therapy is clinical care. It's delivered by licensed professionals who are trained to diagnose and treat mental-health conditions — depression, anxiety disorders, trauma, and more — and to help you heal from the past. Coaching is non-clinical. A coach helps a fundamentally-well person get clearer, more motivated, and more consistent about goals and decisions, mostly looking forward.

How to know which you need

A rough gut-check:

They're not mutually exclusive — plenty of people see a therapist for their mental health and a coach for their goals. And a responsible coach will always refer you to clinical care if what comes up is beyond coaching.
